Tunisia 4.12 million tonnes of phosphates in 2019
Phosphate production reached 4.12 million tonnes in 2019, for a target set at 6 million tonnes. A figure below targets but production at its highest level since 2010. It is the first time since the revolution that production has exceeded 4 million tonnes compared to 2.8 million in 2018 and 3.9 million in 2017. And if the goal of 6 million tonnes has not been reached it is the cause of social movements which continue to halt the production of the Gafsa Phosphate Company. The resumption of production has enabled Tunisia to regain its place on the international market as an important supplier of phosphates. Today, Compagnie des Phosphates de Gafsa and Groupe Chimique Tunisien (GCT) are targeting production that should exceed 6 million tonnes in 2020.
