Libya Emmanuel Macron reaffirms his support for Fayez Sarraj

On May 8, French President Emmanuel Macron received Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj. “The President of the Republic has reaffirmed the support of France to the government of national agreement, with which France will continue its cooperation, said a press release of the Elysee. He stressed all the efforts undertaken by France for two years to bring together Libyan actors around an inclusive political solution, leading as soon as possible to the elections demanded by the Libyan people. He reiterated his willingness to help build peace as part of a political process in Libya, under the umbrella of the United Nations. ”

The two leaders agreed on the importance of broadening and deepening the dialogue with all components of the Libyan nation, east, south and west, including with civil society. Recalling that there is no military solution to the Libyan conflict and to put an end to the military offensive launched towards Tripoli, the President of the Republic encouraged an unconditional ceasefire. He stressed the need to protect civilian populations. In this context, the proposal was put forward for delimitation of the ceasefire line, under international supervision, to define the precise framework.

It was also proposed to establish, in the coming days, an assessment of the behavior of armed groups in Libya, including those directly under the Government of National Accord, in close contact with the United Nations. More generally, the need to fight against all terrorist activity has been reaffirmed. France will remain fully mobilized to support the mediation of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, so that hostilities cease, the dialogue resumes and the Libyan people can live in peace and security. ”
