WHERE IS THE AFRICAN CONTEMPORARY ART MARKET?

New infatuation, new fairs and new auctions on contemporary African art … For 5 years, events dedicated to it have flourished in Paris or London.

In France, everything started with the famous exhibition “The Magicians of the Earth” at the Georges-Pompidou Center and the Grande Halle de la Villette. We were then in 1986. Since then, the exhibition Africa Remix was born in 2005, before seeing succeeding among others in Paris, “Beauty Congo” at the Fondation Cartier in 2015, Seydou Keita at the Grand Palais in 2016.

A switch that would have operated in 2011, according to Salimata Diop, Senegalese curator. “Several galleries were created that year, Tate Modern set up an acquisition committee on Africa, then Paris followed. AKAA relied on this observation that it is there! It was finally the right moment. The moment to launch the first fair in France of contemporary art and design centered on Africa. For this second edition, 38 galleries presented 150 artists from 28 countries during 2 days. All in this central space that is the Carreau Temple … Some will say in the image of what the market of African art is about to become …

Where are we really? this is what we tried to know by going to this demonstration.
